Week one and we are a long way short of a smooth routine.
At some point I’ll work out the science of how to pick which game to go to on which weekend but for the time being it is some combination of randomness my availability (also still trying to avoid clashes with Knight’s games on the TV – hey i haven’t forgotten where i come from). So for the first week I was actually going to go to the Western Bulldogs game on the Sunday until I realised at the last minute that I was double booked with a speaking engagement at the Castlemaine State Festival.
So i went into the ABC studios for Lindy Burns’ program on Friday afternoon to try and find some Kangaroo fans to take me to see their team play Collingwood at the SCG. On the way in to the studio and found a $2.50 Kangaroos supporters cap at the Salvos on Smith Street. Given that the Kangaroos cap was about half the price of the other teams caps in the same bargain bin, and the member numbers statistics i think they need me. I did some research based on the percentages and one extra Roos fan is more than the margin of error.
Don’t get me wrong – i think this is probably a good thing and I have to say that I have always been attracted to an underdog. I’ve never been the type to jump on the same bandwagon that everyone else is on, so I don’t see why I should start now.
After a call for fans to adopt me a guy called Rhys called and he and his wife Kristy offered to take me to the game. I think Rhys was a bit frightened on hold when I likened the experience to 16 blind dates (Lindy quickly clarified that I’m taken in the romance department and we are just talking footy clubs) and he he did his best not to sware when I pointed out that i’d jsut discovered that “we” are the bookies favourites for the Wooden Spoon this year.
After speaking off-air, we arranged to meet outside the ‘G the following day…
