About My Quest

In the 774 Studio in the beginning…

One Man, 16 Teams, One Fateful Decision

OK, so it was one of those ideas you have over a few beers and should probably take long enough to think about before acting on, but I didn’t. After a night on the turps where the subject of my “unattached” status came up for the 400th time i’d run out of excuses for not doing something about it. I have had a lot of excuses for not picking a team in the last 4 years: been busy, was reluctant to be disloyal to my league team, but mostly indecision. Over the years there have been lots of reasons (friends, family, strange omens, celebrity connections, etc) why i nearly picked one team or another but i never quite managed to cross the line and commit to any one AFL footy team.

So, after a few beers, i figured the best way to make up my mind was to actually try out being a fan of every team in the comp and then make a decision after i’ve given each of them a go. So, the following morning i fired off an email to my friend and former ABC colleague Lindy Burns at 774 ABC Melbourne outlining my hare-brained scheme. I asked Lindy whether she’d be interested in having me report on the progress of my quest on her show throughout the footy season and also whether her show would help me rope in a group of people to call in and invite me along to a game with them each week and she foolishly agreed to come along for the ride.

I am pretty sure that everyone in Melbourne (and much of Australia) is going to have an opinion one way or another about which i way i should jump here. Feel free to leave your feedback here or get it touch with the crew at Lindy’s show on 774 and let them know what you think.

Marcus Westbury.

First time I’ve ever blogged (does commenting on your blog make me a blogger – don’t know etiqutte/lingo yet). Listening to you on Lindy’s show today and can understand the sentiment of the St Kilda supporters. I am a long suffering Cats supporter and feel nervous about recommending Geelong. If you can cope with the thrill of anticipation without needing the adrenaline rush of a premiership win then this is the team for you. They lost the premiership the year I was born and have gone on to lose 4 since – you need a trace of the matyr in you to support them. I was in Botswana the year we lost to West Coast and a bloke walked into the local pub in the Okavango Delta a week later with a Premiers Tshirt on – you can run…… Good luck making the decision – don’t try and be too rational; that’s the great thing about footy you can be completely biased without a shred of reason. I barrack for the Cats because I barrack for the Cats.

Thank you so much Marcus for making the trip to Sydney on Saturday. More importantly, thank you for supporting/picking Sydney. Once again it worked wonders and my beloved young Pies were deservedly triumphant . Perhaps you could go and support Hawthorn this weekend; I am sure Jeff would love to take you and fete you with delicious victuals. Your company would no doubt distract him from worrying about the colour of his jacket at game’s end.

Thanks for the support Rosie. Although i am not sure you will be singing the same tune when i go to see the Pies – i still haven’t got to them yet.
